March 2008

The Football Association have today unveiled plans to invest £200 million into improving grassroots football over the next five years. This is the biggest investment programme ever undertaken into grassroots football.
It is to be called "The National Game Strategy 2008-2012".
The initiative was announced today by Chief Exec Brian Barwick, Chairman Lord Triesman and Director of Football Development Trevor Brooking.

In essence they are saying:-
"Across the country there are 7 million players, 125,000 teams, 1,700 leagues and over 400,000 volunteers involved in the national game each week.

The FA wants everyone to have an opportunity to be involved in football. We want to help them be the best they can. And we also want to ensure football is played, watched and enjoyed in a safe, positive environment.

The FA has already committed to investing £44 million per season until 2012 improving every aspect of grassroots football. That’s a significant jump of £10 million a year and includes a £15 million contribution to the Football Foundation.

We have consulted with over 37,000 people involved in the game to get this five-year strategy right and is the largest public consultation in The FA's history.

There are some challenging targets in the strategy. We rely hugely on 400,000 volunteers to run the game at a local level and need to support them more.

In addition, we will work to improve the behaviour of players and spectators, addressing the critically high numbers of referees dropping out every season due to abuse, as well as providing more support in recruiting and retaining referees.

We will aim to provide a high-quality coaching environment for every player – whatever their age or ability. We will also put the policies and procedures in place to safeguard our young players.

We have already shown that football can deliver against important national targets on health, physical activity, social inclusion and community cohesion. Now we want to challenge our strategic partners to work with us to invest in our national game."

Granley Rovers in Partnership with AFC Stoneham

This represents a significant development for both Clubs and enables us to jointly progress our aims and ambitions. A shared objective is to provide the best facilities and learning environments possible in order that footballers of all ages, abilities and gender can pursue their chosen sport to the highest level capable of them.

Both Clubs have obtained good reputations across the region for their high level of organisation, dedication and an ethos of continuous improvement in every aspect of our organisations. The partnership has become possible primarily due to these shared principles.

Granley Rovers achieved FA Charter Club status in January 2006 and AFC Stoneham are a Chartered Adult Club of some standing. Due to the good reputations, earned over a sustained period by both Clubs, it has been decided to retain the names of both Clubs and emphasise the Partnership notion with both Clubs retaining their own organisations towards a shared development agenda.

Granley Rovers have an existing, longstanding, partnership with Twyford Football Club and operate out of Hunter Park in Twyford. This affords the opportunity for players to progress into mens football but is somewhat limited in that Granley cannot locate all of its age groups at this venue. The link with AFC Stoneham will enable us to further develop and provide more opportunities for our youngsters at even higher levels potentially.

How it will work:

We will retain the Granley name and our current administration. Stoneham FC will continue with their current organisation. There will be some joint attendance at committee meeting level along with developing shared aims and objectives.

Granley will run our teams from Minnows through E&DMSL and Tyro. AFC Stoneham will take our teams forward into Youth League at under 16’s upwards with the possibility of Hampshire League standard at under 18’s.

Our current mens team will continue under the Granley banner and our under 18’s Yth Team will remain as Granley for this season with the intention of transferring to AFC Stoneham next season.

We will work together in fundraising and developing facilities in order for both Clubs to benefit and make use of them but this will be a huge undertaking and may take a while to achieve, however, a shared Clubhouse and meeting venue will be high on the agenda along with improved and shared training facilities and expertise.

A further benefit is the opportunity for us to progress players into high levels of football at Wessex League standard and will subsequently attract higher quality players to us and raise our status and profile around the local Area.
